The Best Homemade steamed cabbage and salt fish recipe – Jamaican Style

The best homemade steamed cabbage and salt fish recipe is so easy to prepare. Steamed Cabbage is extremely healthy and with the addition of the salt fish, the taste is enhanced to another level.
Steamed Cabbage and Salt Fish is a very popular dish on the island because it’s very economical and is one of the easiest and most flexible dish to prepare.

1lb Salt Fish/Cod Fish
1 Tbsp Coconut Oil
1 Small Onion, chopped
1 Tomato, chopped
1 Stalk Escallion
3 Cloves Garlic
Scotch Bonnet Pepper (smalls pieces – no seeds)
1 Carrot (Julienne or diced)
2 Bell Peppers (multi color to add to presentation if desired)

1/2 tsp Salt
1/4 tsp Black Pepper
1/4 tsp Red Pepper Flakes
1 tsp Garlic Powder
1 tsp Onion Powder
1 tsp Oregano
1 tsp All Purpose Seasoning
1 lb or 4 cups thickly sliced Cabbage
1/3 cup water

1. Soak codfish/salt fish in saucepan overnight; drain water
2. Add fresh water and boil for 2 minutes; drain codfish/salt fish and rinse.
3. Flake codfish/salt fish into small pieces and set aside
4. Heat Skillet and add chopped vegetables , in addition to a pinch of salt and sautee.
5. Add chopped cabbage, then flaked codfish/salt fish on top along with powdered seasonings.
6. Cover and simmer on low heat for 3 to 4 minutes or until cabbage has wilted.
7. Open, then stir everything together, if water is needed add just a little. You can tell if you hear a frying sound or if the cabbage sticks to the bottom.
8. Continue simmering on low heat for 2 to 3 minutes or until desired. (Al Dente is preferably)
Serve white rice, boiled green bananas, fry dumpling or just eat by itself.
